Clearing the Cobwebs

So it’s been a while hasn’t it? Almost three years from my last blog post.

Time flies when you’re… was I having fun? Perhaps, maybe. It’s been different, that’s for certain.

I would love to say that I would be posting with some regularity, but even that’s not guaranteed, life’s been busy (though now in a different way) and I am not quite as I was.

Perhaps a bit of catching up is in order:

Lots of Shakespeare has entered my life. In a good way, as long as I stay in more the operational side of the tracks.

I have made a conscious effort to not be nearly as involved in theatre as I once was. More for my own sanity than anything else. It was lovely, the periods of time that I was involved almost consistently but it was also draining emotionally and mentally. So a reset was needed.

So what am I doing now? I am back on the Jane Austen bandwagon (who is really surprised?) working on a personal long term project. We’ll see what happens.

I might post on occasion to sort my thoughts again… but we’ll see how that goes.

Recipe: Double Chocolate Chip Raspberry Merlot Ice Cream

Yes, a mouthful and a mouthful of yum if my friends are to be believed… so how did I come up with this concoction?

Well…

3 cups heavy cream
1 cup of your favorite merlot
1 cup of sugar (or honey powder)
1 cup of fresh raspberries
1/2 bag of chocolate chips (I used semi-sweet)

Fairly simple ingredients… and the instructions not that difficult either:
1. Soak the raspberries in the merlot overnight in the fridge
2. puree the merlot / raspberries
3. strain the puree mix to remove the seeds
4. add heavy cream and sugar and mix
5. pour the mix into the ice cream churner / machine for a half hour or until preferred consistency
6. when ice cream is churned then either pack into container and place in freezer or start eating!
7. enjoy!

Fleeting: Family Online Memorial

My paternal side of the family tree were dealt with two major blows within a two year span. When Thanksgiving 2010 came around, with it came the loss of the family patriarch. Less than two years later the family lost the matriarch over Labor Day weekend. Although we do not celebrate these very American holidays… it is impossible to forget the loss of loved ones from so far during a time where family is paramount.

Because they chose to stay in the old country during the Fall… it was difficult for the children to communicate with the parents that have instilled strong qualities of survival; to brace themselves in a world that was unfamiliar to them. When the barriers of communications were lifted and the children were able to communicate with the parents again… it was with many new additions of wives, husbands and grandchildren.

So when the children felt the loss of their beloved parents: a Memorial was set up, first via Facebook… and later an independent website to commemorate the lives of these two individuals both of whom were prominent fixtures in the lives of their eight children and numerous grandchildren (with a few great-grandchildren sprinkled in for good measure).

Within the website there are slideshows of the many branches of the family tree stemming from the lost patriarch and matriarch… through their children and then grandchildren. Memories of the parents from their children’s point of view and moments remembered by the children and grandchildren are all commemorated in this new digital age… and hopefully all of our descendants will grow to love and understand those that came before them.

Fleeting: Online Comics

Something Terrible by Dean Trippe
I really have no idea where to start with this except that after being shown via Upworthy and having a successful Kickstarter campaign to be turned into a hard copy book. This is a must read for anyone out there.

Foxtrot by Bill Amend
Do I really need to say anymore? I mean seriously. I went to a W00tstock when it came to Chicago a few years back and Bill Amend was there and he gave a great monologue that included some of the nerdiest strips that he wrote for the seasons.

HomeStar Runner
This was introduced to me back in college and during my time as a student leader at the university and I have constantly used this as a way to break the ice with incoming freshmen / transfer students. Granted looking back it probably showed my nerdy-side, but ah well.

Kawaii Not
Totally catering to my evil side. Takes harmless everyday things in life and turns them on their head.

Modest Medusa
A friend of mine introduced this series to me a couple of years ago, and I have been hooked since. It just proves that snake ladies can be cool!

XKCD
Taking geekiness / nerdiness to a whole new level. 🙂

Ensign Sue Must Die and The Wrath of Sue
For the Star Trek and writers out there. Takes the concept of a Mary Sue and really turn it on its head in the Star Trek Universe… well the one based off of J J Abrams version of it.

The Friday Project: Every Friday there is another new piece of entertainment be it a game, or an image. I really don’t know how to explain it, but dammit it’s fun.

Fleeting: The End is Nigh…

If there is one thing I learned from this latest slew of auditions it is that I am feeling a sense of “finality” to them. In the sense that if I am not on stage anymore then I am ok with that.

Granted one could argue that I am on a “break” or rather “in between” shows… so it is natural to get into a groove away from theatre… but not so. Normally I would feel that pull of being on stage or having a sense or a need to perform. All that is gone… oddly enough.

Review: Oak Lawn Park District Theatre’s La Cage Aux Folles

Show: LA CAGE AUX FOLLES
Music and Lyrics: Jerry Herman
Book: Harvey Fierstein
Location: Oak Park District Theatre
Director: Josie Nirchi
Music Director: Marty Hesse

Over the weekend I went to see a friend of mine in La Cage Aux Folles as put on by the Oak Lawn Park District. As is always the case there is some good, some bad, and some ugly aspects in community theatre… and since I am the blunt type… well I’ll work with what I can.

In fact… there is one weekend left for this rarely done production and in all honesty there is one aspect of the production that is more than worth the price of admission: Brad Kisner as Albin/Zaza.

The show – to me – seems to revolve around the character of Albin/Zaza and his relationship between his partner Georges and “son” Jean-Michel. Which would make sense that whomever is lucky (or unlucky) enough to capture this part would have been more than just “damn good” to make the production worthwhile and Brad Kisner does in spades.

Not only was he believable as Albin/Zaza but he seemed to just breath the character within every moment. Seriously if Brad were to do a “one man show” being that Albin/Zaza character I would be more than happy to pay the price of admission ($21) to see it.

However the chemistry between Brad and Paul Nirchi (who plays Albin’s partner Georges) seemed off at times. Once in a while I simply didn’t believe the chemistry between the pair, but then again I felt that Brad brought out the best of Paul (much like how Albin brings out the best of Georges) so it seemed like art imitating life.

Paul, I felt, did a good job as Georges, but unlike Brad (where I believed everything coming out of him) I felt that Paul did not reach that level of “believe-ability” if that make sense.

The final third of this familial trifecta is Georges biological son: Jean-Michel as portrayed by Graig Mason, he had the right kind of energy and enthusiasm for a young man in this mid-twenties and his chemistry with both parental figures (Albin and Georges) was realistic and palpable.

Take that a step further and Graig’s interaction with his love interest: Anne as portrayed by Jenn Rooney was extremely fun and realistic to watch. Made for a nice counterpoint to that of Georges/Albin.

Visual Art Commission: Carla Wyzgala’s “Sailor Pluto”

W00t! It is done! The second of three commissions of the “Sailor Moon” series… “Sailor Pluto”! I love Sailor Pluto, the most enigmatic of the Sailor Senshi.

As much as I love the elegance and beauty of Sailor Neptune, I love the elegance and distance of Sailor Pluto. Of all the Sailor Senshi I feel like I relate the most with these two. Them and Mamoru Chiba aka Tuxedo Kamen.

Just a quick recap of the inspiration of the series:

Earlier this year (2012) I went to the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo aka C2E2. After a quick glance through the Artist Alley I saw a watercolor painting of Sailor Moon in her Sailor Senshi uniform. So since I was set on the artist of the watercolor painting the artist and I agreed to swap emails in hopes to find a style that I would be interested in.

After a series of emails, we agreed that she’d work on the Sailor Senshi starting with my favorites: Sailor Neptune and Sailor Pluto. In time she started to love the series and decided to complete the series on her own if I did not wish to have any more than what I really would like. Eventually I asked her to work on a piece involving Tuxedo Kamen, aka Chiba Mamoru (or Mamoru Chiba according to the western context of naming schemes). In response she did a quick series of pencil sketches for all the senshi in their “princess forms” and is just as excited as I am in completing the series for her portfolio.

Eventually I’ll post the original sketches that she sent me weeks ago. 🙂 I’m excited.

Visual Art Commission: Carla Wyzgala’s “Sailor Neptune”

Earlier this year (2012) I went to the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo aka C2E2. Once in a while I would go to the Artist Alley and just walk up and down the aisles and stop at tables that catch my attention for a split second (think of “ooooo shiny”) and if there is something at a table that I rather like I would walk away and wait a few hours or a day and I’ll either go back to the table or contact the artist directly for a personal commission.

Such a thing happened this year when I passed by a table and saw a watercolor painting of Sailor Moon. Yes, I am a Moonie, I was introduced to the anime by a couple of girls I used to be babysit for back in high school / college. I was drawn more into the mythology that the author created for her characters to live in, and that really struck me as something worthwhile. The most I read about the background of the manga series, the more I realized just how much of it related to Greco-Roman mythology and Western Astrology, two realms that I have been interested in for quite some time.

Now that I was sold on the watercolor painting… I sifted through to see what I could be interested in purchasing. Being a lover of art since I am unable to paint, watercolor, etc (I much prefer sculpturing and crafts and knitting/crocheting but that’s a different story) I’ve been collecting artworks for the past decade. Seeing nothing that caught my attention entirely the artist and I agree to swap emails in hopes to find something I would be more interested in.

Euphonia: Beyond Celtic Thunder

Anyone that knows me well enough knows that my tastes in music is fairly eclectic. I mean in my CD collection alone there is a bit of rap, a bit of rhythm and blues, country, pop, rock, classical, etc etc etc. I was never one to conform into any one arena, it’s just not me.

So it should come as no surprise that I would have some celtic music in my collection… especially a quintet of Irish men whom called themselves Celtic Thunder. They were brought together upon the successful heels of Celtic Woman and include two very special gems the really cute Damian McGinty and the soulful tenor Paul Byrom.

Video: Allison Holker & Derek Hough on DWTS Season 13

I am not worthy! I am not going to even comment on the following routine because it is just THAT good. This routine was performed on Dancing with the Stars Season 13, Tuesday 1st of November and it rocked. Primarily an Argentine Tango, there were moments of contemporary, hip hop and flamenco thrown in there for good measure.

Coupled with fantastic music (in this case it is Gypsy by Black Violin)… argh, I can’t comment. Just watch!
