Fleeting: Harry Potter “What Ifs” Part Two

So in the past two posts I mentioned some fanfiction that I found myself reading in their entirety and the “What If” scenarios that caught my attention despite my love of fanfictions that stick with canon. However, since the “What If” scenario that posits what would happen should Cassius Warrington of Slytherin were to be the Hogwarts champion as opposed to Cedric Diggory is so darn appealing how to adjust the rest of the series so that the Hufflepuffs would come into their own…?

The key here is that Hufflepuffs by nature don’t strive for glory like the other three houses, they aren’t necessarily the underdogs either, instead they tend to stick to the background working diligently and consistently to earn their wares. They tend to be the background players who provide the security, knowledge, forethought, etc for any problem and situation while others present said information to the masses.

BETWEEN BOOK 4 (Goblet of Fire) and BOOK 5 (Order of the Phoenix)
Keeping the above in mind it would not have been far from the realm of possibility if towards the end of the events of Book 4 (keeping in track with the “What If” from the previous post that Cassius Warrington was the Hogwarts Champion) Harry Potter glances around the school and sees small groups of Slytherins interacting with students from other houses, or a lone Slytherin being comforted by other houses.

This is the time where the Slytherin students are divided internally, be it within themselves or within the house itself. There are Slytherins that are still steadfast in the ways of the regime as promised by The Dark Lord and there are others whose belief was shaken to the core and they are questioning the world and beliefs that were instilled in them from birth.

Fleeting: Back on that Writing Saddle… Sort Of

One of the problems that have been fairly steady as of late versus ten plus years ago is that although ideas, thoughts, and stories are constant in their presence and in the imagination, the actual writing of them into a cohesive unit is far more difficult

Case in point, one of the oldest fanfictions (what author does not create “what if scenarios” for their favorite characters) the process was fairly smooth in composition. Pick a starting point and simply write. The different groups of characters from three differing places of the world had their own stories to tell before they were to meet and seeing what they were doing came easily… more than easily… it was there.

Another story written before that, the storyline was fairly straightforward, but the writing thereof was not linear, it was all over the place. One moment it was towards the end of the store, the next it was the beginning, and then perhaps somewhere in the middle. Just all over the place until the entirety finally poured on to the page and was then completed.

Nowadays find the writing just as piece meal as it was in those early days. With ideas and storyline all over the place but no real cohesive unit anywhere except in the grandiose scheme of things.

Like right now, as much as one would try to focus on a particular character… another group of characters (currently dubbed “The Musketeers”) just keep clamoring to be seen, then again, gentlemen of that persuasion tend to want for attention. What is an author to do than to write the scene involving these particular enigmatic group of gentlemen and see what would happen.

So what did happen?

UPDATE: NaNoWriMo Day 21

Wow, this was a rather strong writing day. Didn’t expect that. I kind of just sat down, reworked a few scenes, redistributed a bunch of lines and expanded on Scene Six. Now I am done with Scene Six and am looking into my research to see what I have to do next…

Total Word Count: 6,010

Yup, that is a pretty decent jump.

Granted I have been doing a little bit of editing other stuff… so really is this any surprise? I also added an Afterword to the script to gives additional information about inspiration and how the idea came about… which added to the over all word count.

When looking at the “research” for the series of vignettes… I ended up breaking down approximately how many other scenes I most likely have and I counted at minimum around eight and at most? Ha I don’t want to think about that yet… yeeeeaaaah I am not even halfway done. Go figure.

So what else do I have in the queue should I be so lucky as to finish writing the vignettes? Well there is the first ten-minute play formally named “Cycles”, I also have another ten-minute that is going to undergo heavy revisions if not a full out rewrite called “Moments”. Another script that needs to go through heavy revisions is based off of Ray Bradbury’s “The Rocket Man”.

Then of course there is the full show that I have to streamline called “Arrangements”… if I do this right I would be able to whittle the character list from ten to six and possibly even five… but I am unsure if I could even do that! Ugh.

Of course I have all these prose projects that have been on back burner… in the end I am just glad to have gotten started on anything at all… hopefully this motivation lasts into the next month or so. We’ll see.

UPDATE: NaNoWriMo Day 19

So I finally got around to completing a couple more scenes from the series of vignettes stage play that I have been working on being my word total up to 5,019-ish… Well more or less. I am sure I am off by a few words give or take.

From here on out the series will be new material compiled from previous stories… And as thus a kind of “starting from fresh” kind of mentality. Not a bad thing mind you but it may or may not make plowing along easier.

But really…

UPDATE: NaNoWriMo Days 18 and 19

So during a rehearsal line read through over the weekend I went through a couple of ten minute plays of mine and reworked and continued to edit them. I have completed the editing process for one and once I have implemented the changes will go through it again one more time before sending it off to a couple of close friends for their opinions on the changes.

As for the other? Well it needs work. I like the concept and the idea and the whys, but since a lot of the dialogue is based off of conversations I had many moons ago what works in real life doesn’t necessarily work on stage. So I have two choices I could rework from the script what I want or I could scrap the whole thing and just start from scratch. Now that I have a better idea of what I want to do and how to shape it, the latter might be more to my liking, who knows.

What is on the agenda? Other than the above I still have the series of vignettes to continue working on. I am tempted to just go back and start formatting the sucker for my sanity and so others could start reading (or I could start editing) but I don’t know if that would help or hinder the process… Meh, does it really matter? I am getting stuff done… that’s all that counts. 😉

Overall I have gotten… or have been getting a lot more done editing-wise than I had initially anticipated, and it is a good feeling. Moreso now that I have a couple half an hour or so just sitting down and focusing on editing during rehearsals. Multi-tasking is a beautiful thing.

UPDATE NaNoWriMo Days 4 and 15

Yup, you read that right… I didn’t do any writing between days 4 and 15… and it is rather depressing, but what can one do?

So why am I updating? Because I have managed to go through and reproduce three of the five scenes that I lost in the deletion of one script… so that word count is up to around 5,000… but not only that I started expanding and adding in pieces here and there to fill out the scenes already written.

Needless to say I am a bit excited because the next two scenes aren’t not aspects just thrown together, but rather actual events with lots of information that could stand alone. Once I have these last two scenes rewritten I would be golden and after that it is all new material… in the matter of speaking.

Take that a step further and I spent some time earlier today editing the first ten-minute play I ever wrote. I purposely placed the piece on back burner because I wanted a fair amount of time to pass before looking at it again and most likely heavily editing it. Which is what ended up happening.

I deleted a character… rearranged a few lines… changed the mentality of one of the characters so there is more of a punch / conflict and I am happy with what I have.

With some time over the weekend… in between everything else going on, mayhaps I will find time for additional writing?

UPDATE: NaNoWriMo Day 1 and Day 2

As mentioned on my primary blog: Dancing Through the Universe… I am going to make an honest attempt to get something done during the month of November for NaNoWriMo. After all I have who knows how many projects in the pipeline that needs editing, reviewing, rewriting, etc?

So what did I decide to start on? A script… or more accurately a series of scenes (or vignettes as I would call them) that revolve around a singular theme. Unfortunately it is a script where I accidentally deleted the original digital copy of but still have a hard copy with a whole bunch of red-marks on it that I have yet to apply on the digital copy anyway. So I thought that it would be best to work on a script that I know what to expect, but am forced to redo from scratch.

Since this is a script… formatting on its own takes up a lot of time, so I am going to wait until NaNoWriMo is over before I actually go through the work and format it to the correct designations.

In the meantime I am just chugging along… but how did I do? Well Day One was a loss on so many levels.

As for Day Two, I actually got 824 words down during lunch time and then another 792 after I decided to stop working. Ironically enough, this is the completion of one scene or vignette in the series and as thus a decent breaking point.

Current word count: 1616

So what am I writing about?

Conclusion – Final Farewell

“Goodbye you witch! And may Satan save your wretched soul!!!!”

Rachel looked down at the townspeople that she had long since forgiven, the gruesome sight from the night before was too much to handle. How they were killed so quickly and quietly she could never comprehend, not to mention find out. Now she would be paid a sentence that she was originally given before the hysteria finally came full swing.

Tears silently fell from her dark eyes as she remembered her friends and husbands, hanging from a sturdy tree. All of them were sentenced to hanging. Her husband was there at the end of the branch a hook pierced his tongue as he died being hung by his tongue. The mere sight caused her stomach to quench in pain, oh my friends and my love perhaps it would be better this way.

Rachel looked proudly into the abyss of faces that chant the death of the witch, for a moment she was sure that she saw Susannah’s face in the crowds. Her maroon colored eyes, her serious demeanor, it has to be her, but what is she doing here? It was only then that she noticed the younger child that was with Susannah, my goodness what is Hailey doing here, they have to run disappear before anyone sees them.

Rachel felt the flames burning through her legs, but she willed to push the pain aside as she watched the two remaining people alive of her friends. For mere moments her eyes met those of Susannah’s and a wave of calm washed over her… everything would be alright she thought she heard her say. Things are not as they are suppose to be…

As the flames finally engulfed Rachel’s body she felt the blessed release of her mortal life. For the first time she felt hope for the people that condemned her to her death. Perhaps circumstance would bring her and her friends together once more, not as witches, but perhaps as something more…

Epilogue – Remembrance

Since that day many of our friends began to disappear. Poor Michael watching his wife burning amongst the flames pulled him over the edge of despair. Soon after her last screams faded away with the embers, he fled the town and was not heard from until just a few days ago. As it turns out he was living close by the shore of the Pacific deep in depression. When he was finally found by some of our friends all they found was his corpse sitting upon a wooden chair staring into the sea. No one could figure out how he died…

Hailey and Susannah fled to their cabin at the edge of the woods, soon after Hailey found out that her father had died by the hands of pneumonia in Boston. They are still alive and doing alright, Hailey refused to talk to any of the other girls in the Salem area because of their antics with witchcraft. Hailey had soon began to develop a grudge against the majority of the children especially Abigail Williams for the death of her surrogate mother’s friends.

Which brings me to Honor and Millicent, their growing attraction to beyond the point of simply friends caused a great uproar in the village. Even though Honor could pass as a man and could fight with the best of them, the fact that she is in fact a woman and in love with another woman was enough to call them as Satan’s children. Just mere weeks after the death of Rose Chayne, the two were captured and sentenced to burn at the stakes without a trial. The sight was saddening because at the last few moments before thier souls were taken from their bodies did the two finally free one of their hands and touched one another ever so slightly. That small gesture proved to me that no matter what happens they would be together.

Thinking about the past few months has been heart breaking to me, but at the same time I never knew that feelings of fear would pierce the heart of this village. Alas, sometimes it is only through fear that we find the weakness of the village.

The cause of this turmoil in our growing smaller circle of friends lies in the wretched hands of Baterich Reeve and her gossip friend Margarete. If it hadn’t been for those two then perhaps… just perhaps things would have been different. Rose needn’t have to sacrifice herself for my sake and perhaps the village would be peaceful once again.

The last of us are around the small fireplace in our new home far from the hysteria of the Salem Witch Trials. In hopes that we could live the rest of our lives in peace and as normal as possible. Who knows, any of the townsfolk could come knocking on this door and call us witches by association. If that is the case… well… I do not wish to think of the circumstances.

Rachel closed her journal and looked at it solemnly, “Perhaps I should put you someplace safer than here.” She whispered. She looked up to her husband, Jeffrey and the two nodded in unison as knowing what to do is best. Leaning towards the fireplace she tossed the small journal into the flames destroying everything that may cause a later uproar.

“I’m going to find the others, it shouldn’t have taken them this long to do the laundry and find firewood.” Rachel smiled as Jeffrey leaned down and placed a lingering kiss upon her soft lips. “I shall return soon.”

Rachel smiled as she watched her husband leave the home. Taking a look around she cleaned up the pots and pans from the friends supper and waited for the others to return. Looking towards the fire she realized that there wasn’t much wood left, I should go outside and see what is wrong.

She reached for her shawl and opened the door outside, and what had met her deep raven colored eyes was more than she could possibly bare to see…

Prologue – From the Beginning

As I look around my home now, it seem to me, much more emptier than in the past. The ones that used be with the remaining ones are gone now, whether it was being accused of witches, shunning themselves from the community because of losing loved ones, fleeing from the town from accusations.

Thinking about this more, perhaps it would be wise if I write this all from the beginning…

———————————————————————–

Several months ago

Embers dwindled down in the fireplace as the warmth dissipated from the air throughout the home. The cold air from the lingering winter breeze blew throughout the house causing the lone occupant to hold her arms and warm herself slightly.

“How did it turn so cold?” The woman whispered to herself.

Walking outside she grabbed pieces of firewood and headed back into the house, feeling someone’s eyes watching her she turned and looked all around her. Her eyes scrutinized the countryside as she attempted to find something out of the ordinary.

Down the countryside she saw a flash of burgundy red hair, looking at the figure she realized it was just Baterich one of the more prominent females in the community. Baterich Reeve was one of those persons that would watch everyone else and gossip about him or her later. She tended to keep to herself than to go out into the open. Before her husband, Hughes Reeve, death, he had often bragged about his wife’s beauty at the local salon after a few drinks. Hughes died suddenly in his home not so long ago, probably an infection, and the child that the two were expecting also died.

Everyone pitied the poor woman, but the death of her child had also coincided with the unexpected circumstances of the children in the community. The children were walking around the community and their homes in trance-like states; their behavior was strange to say the least.

Amongst these young girls, was a child of ten years of age, her hair was of a dark black hue, some would have sworn to see purple highlights in the child’s hair; it was cut short to straight just above the shoulder. Hailey Tothyll’s father, was the prominent physician in Salem has it not been for his recent calling to Boston a few months ago. Now young Hailey resided in the home of the physician’s close assistant Susannah Mereworth.

Hailey, too, began to exhibit symptoms of reminiscent of the other girls. Somehow, Susannah was able to bring the child about and now young Hailey was about to run around like a child again. Susannah kept to herself for the most part, she was a part of the circle of friends that nothing seemed to be able to break their chain of friendship.

The female smiled at the friendships, and walked into her home with the firewood. Carefully she placed the wood onto the dying embers hoping the embers would catch the new fuel, however the embers died away at the hearth. Puzzled, the young woman carefully crouched to the fireplace and attempted to start the fire again. Seeing the sparks and the embers catching on again she stood up, took off her coif and brushed her long black hair from her eyes. She looked at her reflection in the window and noticed the faint violet highlights in her hair, she straightened out her hair and replaced the coif.

Looking to the small cooking area she sat down and readied herself with supper when a commotion outside grew in pitch and in sound. Curious to the commotion she walked towards the door and reached to turn the knob.

Before she may open the door, the door flew open and she faced an angry red haired woman. The female at the door pointed an accusing finger towards the other’s direction and screamed, “You, you were the one that bewitched my husband to death and killed our child!”

Introduction – Better Left Forgotten

I do not know why I am writing this. I do not know how I managed to continue to live this long. Things seem so different now; we used to be a part of such a close-knit town where everyone knew everyone else. People could walk by one another with a smile on their face and a gesture of a greeting and such. The children would work in the farms with young Hailey, and later would spend time on their own.

Everyone did their part to keep our little town alive. John Proctor would go out hunting with several of the other men in town, including my husband and his friends. The women would tend to the children with Rebecca Nurse. Everything seemed to be in place, and there wasn’t anything that could possibly throw our lives off course… or so we believed.

At first I thought that it was terrible that the children might have made contact with Satan. I prayed for the children day after day, night after night. But when they accused those poor souls of practicing witchcraft I was shocked. I knew that young Hailey was a part of the girls that were supposedly possessed by these witches, but since then she stayed at home with her foster mother Susannah. What am I saying… I shouldn’t even be talking about such things, after all, anyone could be eavesdropping and an accusation of being – being – well let us just keep it at that. It is strange, how everything seemed to have started with an accusation.

I have often wondered that if I had not allowed my friend to defend their friendship with me, justify why I was able to do things that others could not… then perhaps, perhaps, they would still be with me and everyone left today.

Now I would sleep with the screams echoing through my head, the voice of my friend talking while I attempt to continue with my life. Most night falls, some of our friends would come by and we would talk about what could have been. Since my friend’s death nothing was the same anymore, no more laugher, no more freedom. It is as if everything we had come here for was in vain.

I look back and I wonder, I knew whom it was that accused me of taking part in witchcraft, it was she – which I later found out – that influenced young Abigail Parris to accuse the Proctors of witchcraft as well. What others close to me and myself, do not understand is whom was it that sealed the fate of my friend. What puzzles us more was what the accusation was based upon, for we were not permitted to attend my friend’s trial. Alas, perhaps that is one thing we shall never have the chance to learn…

Vignette: Silver Moonlight (Story 1)

AUTHOR NOTE: This was written as a part of a compilation series at the Silver Moonlight website in 2001. What happened is that someone starts the story and another picks up a story and continues for a little bit and stops then another picks it up, etc. Silver Moonlight was a Sailor Moon fansite back in the day, so obviously the following is Sailor Moon based.

Mamoru felt the blood drain from his head as those three words escaped Rei’s lips.  Realizing that they are going to need a private room, “Ryoko, please take Ms. Minako Aino to a hospital bed, I will be there is a few minutes. And make sure that her friends are there with her.”

Ryoko protested, “But sir, Ms. Aino should be tested for…”

“I know what Ms. Aino has, just take them to a hospital room, and I will be there shortly.” With a slight nod the secretary called upon a nurse to take the quartet to an empty hospital room.

As the four were being ushered away, Rei looked back towards Mamoru’s direction, within, she knew that Mamoru is tearing himself apart for not being there to protect Usagi. At the same time he was trying to pull himself together so find the next course of action.

Mamoru for his part was beating himself up for not being there to protect Usagi. He did feel her transform, but that faded rather soon.  Walking away from the waiting room, Mamoru went directly to his office to gather his bearings, <if Usagi is not here then where is she?>  Mamoru felt for their bond and realized that Usagi is no where in this dimension, but another. <Then how to get to her?> Mamoru reached his office and fell onto the chair. His hand combed through his jet black hair. After going through his hair, his hand was full of perspiration.

He took a deep breath, he has to stay strong, not just for his sake, but for the sake of the other senshi, of his Usako. After a few short moments Mamoru walked to the hospital room where the four girls resided.

After he was sure that no one was within hearing distance, he placed his hand upon Minako head and concentrated his aura to heal her wound. Much to the shock of the other senshi a golden aura surrounded Mamoru’s hand and soon surrounded the Senshi of Love. After a few moments, Minako’s wounds were healed, though with a headache from her concussion.

“Mamoru, how did you?” Ami stammered, there were no words that could describe what she felt.

Mamoru shook his head, “There is no time, we have to find Usako and soon. Mamoru walked towards the hospital phone, intent on telling the receptionist that he was going to take the rest of the week off due to a personal emergency when a black portal opened in the room.

The senshi were readying themselves for a possible battle when a young girl of about twelve walked through the portal. Her hair was of the darkest purples, her eyes a darker shade of purple, were cold, and unyielding. She wore a sailor fuku of violet with black bows, she wore purple boots that laced up to her knees. In her hand was a glaive that stood more than a foot taller than her.

Much to the shock of the people in the room, “I am Sailor Saturn, and now,” she pointed her now glowing glaive towards the portal, “you have to leave here if you wish to secure the future of Crystal Tokyo.”

Queen Serenity closed her eyes as a soft breeze coaxed her to rest. Her mind drifted to the nothingness that became quite common during those times when she wanted nothing more than to relax. As her mind continued to slip further into the comforting abyss… it started to wander to the times of long ago. Times that were once free and not quite as chaotic, to a time where there was no destiny nor fate taking a hand in her future…

After what seemed to be just mere seconds she felt the warmth of the sunlight against her skin. Children laughter was heard far in the distance and she felt the afternoon breeze tickle her from her temporary reverie.

“Usagi-chan! Usagi wake up!”

A voice yelled to her, instantly Queen Serenity woke up. The picture she saw around her was not of the palace, nor was there the crystalline glow of her beloved city. What she saw before her was greener and more beautiful than she remembered the park in Tokyo to be.

“Usagi! Over here odango-atama!”

Serenity looked to the distance and saw Sailor Mars and Sailor Venus rushing over to her, <Usagi? But does that mean…> She lowered her head and gazed at her clothing, sure enough she was wearing the high school uniform. Looking back at Mars and Venus it would seem that they too were wearing their respective high school garments. <How in the… where is everyone?> She wondered.

Instinctively she rushed to her best friend and gave her a hug, “Hello Mars-chan,” seeing her other close friend she nodded, “Venus-chan.” However the reception was taken to a sudden jolt.

“What are you talking about odango atama? Mars? Venus? Did you eat more odango’s than you could think with?” The raven haired girl let go of Usagi and looked at her quizzitively. Looking to her golden-haired companion, “I knew she didn’t have anything in her head.”

Usagi’s heart pumped harder as her blood boiled quickly, <nothing? How could she? I’m the heir to the Moon Kingdom, Queen of Crystal Tokyo. I…> then she realized that her closest friends did not answer to their respective planets… in fact they seemed to be oblivious to… well… everything.

Forcing a slight smile and not really understanding what is going on with her friends, Usagi joined them in park never noticing a shadow of a tall young man looking at her with confused eyes.
