Entertainment: US Gymnastics Olympic Team 2012

Late last night the final places for the Gymnastics Team has been assigned as well as the alternates should something happened to the members of the US Mens and Womens Gymnastics Olympic Team.

A couple of nights ago (after the US Men’s Gymnastics Olympics Final) I attempted to figure out who would inevitably be chosen for the Mens and Womens Gymnastics Teams for the US. Well, when it came to the actual Olympic teams I would able to figure out who would be placed onto the team as well as what would have happened should Jonathan Horton be chosen over Chris Brooks.

As for the alternates, I didn’t really do as well… I was better with the women as opposed to the men, but still that was a crapshoot in comparison to the actual team. Well now that we know who is a part of the Olympic team let’s see how they might be used during the Olympics in London.

Before we move on, below is a schedule of the Artistic Gymnastics in London:
– Saturday July 28th: Mens Qualifying
– Sunday July 29th: Womens Qualifying
– Monday July 30th: Mens Team Final
– Tuesday July 31st: Womens Team Final
– Wednesday August 1st: Mens Individual All-Around
– Thursday August 2nd: Womens Individual All-Around
– Sunday August 5th: Mens Floor Exercise, Mens Pommel Horse, Womens Vault
– Monday August 6th: Mens Vault, Mens Rings, Womens Uneven Bars
– Tuesday August 7th: Mens Parallel Bars, Mens Horizontal/High Bar, Womens Floor Exercise, Womens Balance Beam

Now, the purpose of the Qualifying rounds is to find out who would be eligible for the team event and the various individual events. For the Qualifying Round each country that is eligible for the team event should put up to four gymnasts on each of the apparatus and the lowest score gets dropped for the final score. Also, in the meantime, each individual gymnast will be scored to see if they would qualifying for not only the individual all-around and then the individual apparatus.

In order for the gymnasts to qualify for the individual all-around they would have to be required to be put up for every apparatus during the qualifying rounds. To give an idea, during the last Olympics in Beijing 2008 the only athletes on the Mens Gymnastics Olympics Team to have posted up scores for all six apparatus were Jonathan Horton and Alexander Artemev. From those scores both qualified for the all-around and Jonathan’s score was one of the top eight scores that qualified for the Horizontal Bar while Alexander’s score was high enough to qualify for the pommel horse.

For the team event three gymnasts would be required to go up to each apparatus and those same three scores will be counted, none would be dropped. If you take a look at what happened in Beijing 2008, Alexander Artemev, though he was put up on all six apparatus during the Qualifying Round… during the Final Round he was only required for the pommel horse and that just happened to be the last rotation during the Team Round.

From the Qualifying Round the top eight scores from each apparatus qualify for the individual event finals and the top twenty-four individual gymnasts would qualify for the all-around. There’s a catch however, only the top two from each individual country would be allowed for the individual events.

Below is my supposition as to who the US Gymnastics Team would put up for the Qualifying Round at London and those in bold are the scores that I believe would end up being counted based on the scores from the Olympic Trials:

MENS GYMNASTICS OLYMPIC TEAM
NAME FE PH SR V PB HB
Danell Leyva Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes
John Orozco Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes
Jonathan Horton Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes
Jake Dalton Yes Yes Yes
Sam Mikulak Yes Yes Yes Yes

From the above, though not fairly certain I wouldn’t be surprised to see Danell and John in the All-Around, as for the individual apparatus? Well, who really knows?

WOMENS GYMNASTICS OLYMPIC TEAM
NAME V UB BB FE
Gabrielle Douglas Yes Yes Yes Yes
Jordyn Wieber Yes Yes Yes Yes
Alexandra Raisman Yes Yes Yes Yes
Kyla Ross Yes Yes
McKayla Maroney Yes Yes

Even though Gabrielle, Jordyn and Alexandra are all most likely going to be used in all four apparatus, only two would qualify for the all-around, namely: Gabrielle and Jordyn.

Well, the Olympics are going to start on July 27th with the Opening Ceremonies, so there is still time left for the individual gymnasts to improve upon their performances and hopefully find themselves in more than just the Qualifying and Team Rounds. 🙂
